Many women have turned to CBD to cope with the physical and emotional strains of pregnancy. CBD has become an alternative to potentially harmful over-the-counter painkillers due to its alleged pain reducing properties.
What Is CBD?
CBD is simply one out of hundreds of non-intoxicating cannabinoids found in cannabis. Though it’s often confused with THC, CBD itself has no capacity to create an addictive or intoxicating effect.
Rather, CBD is valued for its ability to create positive shifts in users’ mental, physical, and emotional health over time. CBD is well known for its claimed anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and analgesic (pain relieving) properties. CBD works by helping our bodies natural cannabinoids bind to our Endocannabinoid System, or ECS. The ECS is responsible for balancing all our bodies needs.
According to research and user anecdotes, CBD may be helpful for conditions that include:
- Nausea, poor appetite, and rapid changes to body weight
- Depression, anxiety, and PTSD
- Chronic pain

Is It Safe To Use CBD Oil While Pregnant?
Interestingly, it appears that CBD may be able to help fight addiction. There are a few studies which back up this claim. For example, a case study in 2012 followed a 19-year-old who was showing symptoms of cannabis withdrawal. She was treated with CBD, and CBD was found to aid in the reduction of cannabis withdrawal symptoms.
Similar results were found with individuals who had recovered from an opioid addiction. A 2019 study used individuals who had a history of opioid addiction and showed them videos of drug-related behavior. The study claims to have found that those individuals given CBD showed lowered rates of anxiety and drug cravings.
During pregnancy, everything that a woman ingests has the potential to come into contact with the fetus. This is great when consuming healthy products, like prenatal vitamins and leafy greens. Unfortunately it also applies to potentially harmful substances like alcohol and nicotine. Clearly it’s vital not to ingest anything that could negatively impact the fetus.
Does CBD Have Long Term Effects
Currently, there isn’t enough research showing potential long-term impacts of CBD use on the fetus during pregnancy. It will take decades of clinical trials and other research in order to determine the safety of CBD.
However, we do know that THC-rich products may have a detrimental effect on a young fetus’ development. Interestingly, the endocannabinoid system is present in mammals from the first cell division on. This clearly marks the ECS great importance to our well-being. This is why more research is vital to people’s understanding of how CBD might affect their long-term health.
Studies have demonstrated that mouse embryos exposed to THC showed slowed signs of neurological development. Other studies have also indicated there may be detrimental effects of exposing developing fetus’ to external cannabinoids. Again, it is vital that more research be done to understand all of these impacts.
Though we know that THC should be avoided, researchers have not observed any negative effects of CBD consumption during pregnancy. However, expecting mothers should still exercise the utmost caution and speak with their primary care physician before consumption.
A physician will know best how to safely configure THC free CBD products into an existing health regimen.
