Is It Safe To Take CBD While Pregnant

Can You Use CBD Oil If You Are Pregnant?

Ever since CBD became legal throughout most Western countries, research has been popularizing the treatment as an effective way to combat physical, emotional, and mental health conditions. Some pregnant women are wondering whether they can safely enjoy the benefits of their favorite CBD treatments.

What Is CBD?

Though CBD has long been associated with marijuana, the surprising truth is that CBD is neither psychoactive nor addictive. CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is one out of over one hundred naturally occurring compounds extracted from strains of hemp and cannabis.

Not only does CBD not create any high in the user, it can actually work to counteract the psychotropic effect of its cousin THC.  Instead, CBD works by binding to receptor sites all along the endocannabinoid system, also known as the ECS, to promote homeostasis in mood, digestion, appetite, immune response, inflammation, and pain response.

For reference, the ECS refers to a regulatory network of receptors found in the brain, peripheral nervous system, the immune system, and the gut. Every mammal on earth has an ECS, which suggests that it is a deeply ingrained aspect of human health and wellness.

It should be no surprise why pregnant women would feel tempted to turn to CBD-based treatments. For over ten years, researchers have continually demonstrated that CBD acts as an effective pain reliever, anti-inflammatory, and anti-anxiety substance.

Is It Safe To Take CBD While Pregnant?

During pregnancy, it’s a well-established fact that everything the mother consumes will interact with the fetus and affect its development. In this regard, it makes sense that doctors recommend healthy diets and prenatal vitamins while giving strong precautionary advice against cigarettes and alcohol.

Many women are anecdotally reporting that CBD has acted very effectively against muscle aches, soreness, bloating, and morning sickness. However, this doesn’t mean that CBD is proven safe.

Currently, the only large study showing the effects of CBD on pregnancy was tested on mouse embryos, which demonstrated that CBD didn’t have an appreciable impact on the brain development of the fetus. By contrast, THC was shown to slow down the physical and neurological growth of the fetus – even more concerning, increasing use of THC correlated with even higher degrees of developmental deficiency.

To put it simply, there’s a lack of conclusive data showing if hemp-derived CBD is one hundred percent safe for a human fetus. Researchers do know that, even when the fetus is only two cells, there is an ECS present that can bind to cannabinoids like CBD.

In short, we’ve established that CBD can influence the fetus, but there has been little headway into establishing if it’s safe or not. However, unlike THC, CBD hasn’t ever been demonstrated to delay the development of a fetus in recent history.

Before using CBD, it is recommended that pregnant women first consult with their primary care physician to plan a comprehensive care routine to discuss how CBD might help. Visit our product page for some of the most legal, effective, and safe CBD products on the market.
