Recently, cannabidiol has been used for various health reasons. One of the more notable uses of CBD is its ability to assist in treating depression.
CBD acts as a messenger between molecules called endocannabinoids. Endocannabinoids work in the body to assist the nervous system in communicating. They regulate memory, inflammation, appetite and mood. CBD increases the amount of endocannabinoid levels in the brain and animal studies have concluded that mice who consumed CBD had increased levels of stimulated nerve growth due to an increase in chemicals in the hippocampus.
CBD also increases brain-derived neurotrophic factors, or BDNF. These help neurons survive and remain healthy, as well as encouraging the growth of new synapses (brain connections) and neurons. Recently, rodent studies were done that indicated increased endocannabinoid levels, which in turn, enlarge the BDNF in the brain. This improves mood and brain health in the hippocampus. In these studies, CBD activates a serotonin receptor (5-HT1A). Therefore, using CBD products may increase the wellbeing of the hippocampus and aid in relieving some of the symptoms of anxiety, depression and/or mood swings.
Most early studies have been done on rodents and more studies need to be completed before a definite cause and effect between CBD and depression can be determined. But, preliminary evidence remains promising.
