What Is Industrial Hemp?

If you’re curious about CBD products, you may have heard the term hemp used by manufacturers.

There are a lot of buzz marketing terms out there, so it’s important that you understand what hemp is before buying CBD.

So, What Is Industrial Hemp?

Industrial hemp refers to a specific subspecies of the Cannabis sativa plant. In fact, the term is not entirely but largely a legal construction that changes from country to country.

In the USA, industrial hemp is any plant rich in cannabinoids with less than 0.3 percent THC by weight. THC is the psychoactive ingredient that gives marijuana its intoxicating and potentially addictive qualities.

By contrast, cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, and CBN are active organic compounds that don’t have any intoxicating properties. There are over 113 cannabinoids, the vast majority of which don’t cause any high at all.

Most countries define industrial hemp based primarily on the concentration of THC in the herb. For instance, countries in the EU consider industrial hemp a strict 0.2 percent THC.

Other countries with more restrictive laws may make no distinction between marijuana and hemp at all. Both are cannabis and hence completely illicit.

Despite legal changes over time, hemp has played an important role in human’s social and agricultural development. Furthermore, hemp use is ancient and goes back farther than recorded history.

Cannabis has grown wildly in many parts of Central Asia, Africa, and Europe for years. Nomadic populations then spread it throughout the old world.

How Is Hemp Different From Marijuana?

Technically, any plant with more than 0.3 percent THC concentration is considered marijuana. Industrial hemp has less than .3% THC content.

That said, it would take a much higher concentration of THC for the user to notice any effect.
